On today's episode of Conversations with Big Rich. My guest is Zack Grimes. Zack is the President of Rally in the Ozarks, a rally for vintage 4x4 enthusiasts. Zack, it's great to have you on the podcast today, and I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your rally.
[00:01:33.620] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. Thanks for having me. I'm looking forward to the conversation and grateful for the opportunity to talk about it.
[00:01:39.600] - Big Rich Klein
So let's start off where I normally start off with all my guests. And where Where are you born and raised?
[00:01:47.080] - Zack Grimes
So I was born in Kansas City, Missouri, raised there for just a few years, and then moved to a small town in Kansas, just south of Kansas City.
[00:01:56.060] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. And what town was that?
[00:01:59.100] - Zack Grimes
Osawadame, Kansas. If anyone out there- Osawadame? Yeah.
[00:02:03.650] - Big Rich Klein
Must be an Indian word.
[00:02:05.960] - Zack Grimes
It's actually the Osage Indians and the Potawadame River shoved together.
[00:02:11.220] - Big Rich Klein
All right. That makes sense. Okay. And What was it like growing up in an area like that? I mean, pretty rural, sounds like.
[00:02:20.660] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, small town. It was good. It was a good town. Get the opportunity to play sports. We had shop classes, and you can choose where you want to go. We're not too far from Kansas City, so if that's where you need to be, you can go up there. But if you like the rural life, It was certainly there for you.
[00:02:47.180] - Big Rich Klein
Yeah. My wife raised her kids in a smaller community, and one of the things that she said with that is that it was big enough to have all the opportunities, but small small enough to where everybody had the opportunity.
[00:03:04.760] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, exactly.
[00:03:07.300] - Big Rich Klein
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. That wasn't always the case. I think in my freshman year of football, we had 128 freshmen show up to try to make the team. There was only uniforms for 60.
[00:03:23.180] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, we didn't have that problem.
[00:03:25.520] - Big Rich Klein
Right. So growing up there, what were the things you did for activities?
[00:03:32.620] - Zack Grimes
Well, my parents were outdoors people. How I got into off-roading was my dad bought us some ATVs, and we would go ride ATVs on the weekends. There were a few parks in the area, not too far of a drive. So we went camping. We worked on cars, and I wrestled. So that was my childhood, those sorts of things.
[00:04:07.260] - Big Rich Klein
So your sport, because I was going to get into that, sport during school and stuff was wrestling?
[00:04:17.380] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. I played almost everything until probably my junior year is when I focused on wrestling. But that was my niche for sure.
[00:04:31.000] - Big Rich Klein
I have to ask because what class in wrestling did you wrestle?
[00:04:36.740] - Zack Grimes
As far as- Weight class. Oh, weight class. Oh, 189 was my weight class. Okay.
[00:04:47.520] - Big Rich Klein
All right. That's pretty good for a high schooler.
[00:04:51.040] - Zack Grimes
Yeah.
[00:04:52.880] - Big Rich Klein
What student were you? Were you one of those that were really studious, or did you look out the window waiting to get outside?
[00:05:02.140] - Zack Grimes
Well, my mother was very adamant that I got good grades. While I probably was looking outside more than I should have been, I definitely made sure that I somehow got at least a B in everything. Senior year, definitely spent more time in the shop classes than any other. Luckily, had enough credits to where I could take a lot of shop classes my senior year and had two really great shop teachers. That's how I got through high school.
[00:05:33.020] - Big Rich Klein
What shop classes were they?
[00:05:35.680] - Zack Grimes
We had wood shop, and we had more of an agriculture, mechanics, welding shop. So And luckily, even though we didn't necessarily have an auto shop, he was a very good guy and let us pull our trucks in and work on them when we needed to.
[00:05:54.100] - Big Rich Klein
I like how you said, pull our trucks in. We got to take our cars in.
[00:06:01.100] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. No.
[00:06:02.610] - Big Rich Klein
Being rural, trucks is the way, right?
[00:06:05.420] - Zack Grimes
Trucks was the way. We all had our muscle cars, but definitely, even to this day, all my friends, we still drive more pickup trucks than anything.
[00:06:18.300] - Big Rich Klein
I'm a pickup truck guy, even though I'm a jeeper. I'm a truck guy. I spend more time in my truck than I probably do in my house.
[00:06:27.260] - Zack Grimes
Yeah.
[00:06:29.140] - Big Rich Klein
So Did you work as a kid to raise money, anything like that, or was it all school and sports and family life and then work later on?
[00:06:42.280] - Zack Grimes
Well, so I grew up working on cars, and throughout, you're buying cars and you're selling cars just the way you do. And my parents hardly ever bought a new vehicle. I think we had one new vehicle. And so we're always in and out of working on cars. And my dad had an international Scout when I was really young. He ended up selling it to get a more practical vehicle because at that point it was already creeping up on 20 years old. He sold it, but then I always wanted a Scout. We bought a couple of those, and for whatever reason, they were too rusty. Mechanically, they weren't good, You could still pick up a Scout really reasonable in the early 2000s. We started as we sold them, we maybe would part one out or whatever and realized that there was this market. This was before Facebook Marketplace, and even really before Craigslist, and started parting these scouts out and realized that there was a little bit of money to be made there. Then once Craigslist did come along, I had a running ad all through high school of like, I've got these scout parts, or whatever.
[00:08:09.700] - Zack Grimes
And I would sell a lot of parts.
[00:08:14.000] - Big Rich Klein
Interesting. Do you know Jeff Ishmael? Yeah. Okay. Great guy. Yeah. I was going to say, Scout guys always seem to know each other.
[00:08:23.420] - Zack Grimes
It is a very small community. It's grown a lot in the last 5, 10 years or whatever. But yeah, It's always been small.
[00:08:32.320] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent. Yeah, he's in my neck of the woods. Okay, so you're a scout guy. So that's the tie in with the vintage and doing the rally that you do. But again, We'll get into that in a little bit. I want to get more into depth on you. Job-wise, high school, did you work, punch a time card anywhere or something like that?
[00:08:58.500] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, we A few of my friends and I all decided we needed to get some jobs that were a little more steady pay. We went around and I filled out tons of applications for every restaurant in the county, it felt like and finally got a dishwashing job at a German restaurant in the town over. I worked that for three years. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night was washing dishes.
[00:09:30.000] - Big Rich Klein
Friday and Saturday nights. Wow, those are date nights.
[00:09:35.700] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. Usually, we'd get off by 9: 30 or so.
[00:09:39.690] - Big Rich Klein
Okay.
[00:09:40.260] - Zack Grimes
Wasn't open real late.
[00:09:43.020] - Big Rich Klein
So you were able to still have a social life?
[00:09:46.580] - Zack Grimes
Yep. Yep.
[00:09:47.700] - Big Rich Klein
Perfect. And what about after that, after the German restaurant?
[00:09:54.920] - Zack Grimes
After that, I was gearing up for more of a construction life. So graduated, went to college, and started taking some industrial arts classes in college.
[00:10:13.160] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. Did you graduate or did you get an A or a BA or whatever?
[00:10:20.720] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, got a bachelor's in Applied Technology and Education and became a teacher.
[00:10:27.760] - Big Rich Klein
You're in the education education field?
[00:10:31.940] - Zack Grimes
Was, yeah.
[00:10:32.700] - Big Rich Klein
Was, okay. And are you married?
[00:10:37.540] - Zack Grimes
Yeah.
[00:10:38.060] - Big Rich Klein
Okay.
[00:10:38.460] - Zack Grimes
I met my wife in college, and we moved back to Kansas City together and eventually got married.
[00:10:45.900] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent. So if you said that you were a teacher, what are you doing now? What was the next step after teaching then?
[00:10:59.440] - Zack Grimes
After teaching. So I was teaching construction and woods, processes, things like that.
[00:11:07.120] - Big Rich Klein
What level?
[00:11:07.840] - Zack Grimes
I taught some middle school, but mostly high school.
[00:11:11.860] - Big Rich Klein
Okay.
[00:11:13.020] - Zack Grimes
And after I decided teaching really wasn't for me, I decided to go into construction management and worked for a steel fabrication and building erection company. I did a large structural steel buildings and data centers and things like that.
[00:11:34.020] - Big Rich Klein
Is that still what you're doing now?
[00:11:37.380] - Zack Grimes
No. Decided that wasn't for me either.
[00:11:40.280] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. You're like me then. You've had a number of different doors that you've walked through.
[00:11:46.920] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. Ultimately, what I liked about teaching was that I was working with my hands all day, helping the youth learn how to work with their hands, and and learn skills and stuff like that. I never really was supposed to be behind a computer for long hours during the week. I just said that enough was enough of the Top Life, and I've started my own shop working on scouts.
[00:12:19.930] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. All right. So you've got your own business now. Okay. And what's the name of that business?
[00:12:27.520] - Zack Grimes
Grimes Garage.
[00:12:28.600] - Big Rich Klein
Grimes Garage.
[00:12:30.120] - Zack Grimes
Just keeping it simple.
[00:12:31.900] - Big Rich Klein
And it is what town is that located in?
[00:12:35.420] - Zack Grimes
I live in Carthage, Missouri. Okay.
[00:12:40.880] - Big Rich Klein
And let's move on into the more of the realm of the rally or your four-wheel drive experience. We'll get to the rally. We're going to put that off till closer to the end. But you were in the scouts, you were selling parts. Now you've got a shop. You're specializing in scouts, or do you service or work on all vehicles?
[00:13:09.320] - Zack Grimes
Specializing in scouts and parts. I still have a lot of used parts. Over the years, I've accumulated quite a few used parts. So if anybody in the area is ever looking for those, I can usually help them out with that.
[00:13:26.220] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. And what What work are you doing? Is it restoration work or are you making them more hard car trail or a combination of?
[00:13:38.680] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. Like right now, I've got a customer in here. We're doing floorpans and rockers and anything that the truck needs between the front and rear bumper, anything to get it back on the road. But with getting into some more off-roading, I'm starting to pick up things that are a little more trail type stuff, but still learning. Haven't done anything like a four link or anything like that. But definitely starting to learn about those things.
[00:14:11.980] - Big Rich Klein
Are you happier now running your own garage than you were either teaching or sitting behind the computer?
[00:14:21.200] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, I would definitely say that there's a lot of stress that comes along with being an entrepreneur, but being able to, at the end of the day, be working for yourself has a lot of satisfaction.
[00:14:38.340] - Big Rich Klein
Yeah, and I found a lot of benefits. I hated myself when I worked for others. And when I finally became a rock crawling promoter is when I started to really enjoy life. Yeah, there was a lot of stresses, and you never knew how the weather was going to be. You never knew how many people were going to show up to compete or to spectate, or if your toilet vendor was going to show up with toilets, or the food vendors were going to show up like they said they were. But there was all sorts of external stresses. But at the end of the day, there was a big reward.
[00:15:20.920] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, I would agree.
[00:15:23.420] - Big Rich Klein
So let's talk a bit about how you started or How the rally came about.
[00:15:34.960] - Zack Grimes
So living in Kansas City, I was always trying to get other scout owners. I'm selling parts to all these people, and I was wanting to get an event going, but just for whatever reason, wasn't ever able to get something put together and was probably too young to even attempt something like that anyways. As my wife and I were looking for better there was a good group of scout owners in Southwest Missouri that we were starting to hang out with and go on like scout events with and go to state parks or go cruising or whatever. So made some friends down here in Southwest Missouri, and we were just talking about doing an event. All of a sudden we were like, Well, let's do one. And a friend of mine said, Let's go to this off-road event at the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch. And like I said, I had wheeled ATVs and stuff like that, and I had taken my scout on forest service roads and stuff like that, but nothing too hard core off-road. So I didn't really know what to expect, but I was like, Sure, let's do So we go. There was three of us that ended up going to this event, and we're sitting out, and I have no idea what to expect.
[00:17:13.100] - Zack Grimes
I've put a lift kit, I've got some 31-inch mud tires, and I've got a winch on the front of this old '76 Scout Traveler. Other than that, it is pretty much bone stock. It did have a Holly sniper on it, and I have no idea what I'm getting myself into. We're around a bunch of Jeeps on 37s, 40s. There's some pretty big Jeeps at this event. Luckily, we got put with a guy who was in a flat fender, Willies. He was our group leader.
[00:17:46.900] - Big Rich Klein
Nice.
[00:17:48.980] - Zack Grimes
We're like, Okay, I think if we can do what he can do, then we'll be all right. Which little did I know that those are the greatest 4x4 of all time. Right.
[00:18:00.000] - Big Rich Klein
Conquered the world.
[00:18:02.380] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. But anyways, it turned out to just be an amazing two days of wheeling. Everybody was super nice. Everybody was super helpful. Scout was overheating a couple of times. We took the hood off and finished the event, and nobody really was ever telling us, You got to go park that thing or anything like that. Everybody was real encouraging. We started talking, the three of us that were there, and we said, We should do our event here. We can combine what we're doing, going on the cruises and whatnot, and then we can throw some trail riding in, too. The great thing about that park is there's rock bouncer type stuff, and then there's stuff that looks like a forest service road all at that Park.
[00:19:00.460] - Big Rich Klein
And so the first year was last year that you did the event? Yes.
[00:19:09.780] - Zack Grimes
2024 was our first year. Okay.
[00:19:13.540] - Big Rich Klein
And how many participants did you have?
[00:19:16.420] - Zack Grimes
We had around 20 trucks in the two days. Well, that's good. Yeah.
[00:19:20.220] - Big Rich Klein
And is it specific to scouts, or is it any vintage? And then how do you describe a vintage?
[00:19:30.140] - Zack Grimes
Well, so initially we thought, well, it'll just be a scout event. But then, like I said, our group leader of that event, we started to befriend him and we said, well, he's cool and maybe other vintage four by four owners are cool, too. We should let them join in with us. So we said, hey, let's open this thing up to anything. And then we had to pick a year. And I said, well, it's got be older than the '90s because I was born in the '90s, so I can't be- So you don't want to be vintage yourself.
[00:20:06.660] - Big Rich Klein
But I'm definitely vintage.
[00:20:11.960] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, so I'm holding on to that. But But yeah, so we said 1990, whatever. That's a decent... A lot of the '80s vehicles are still... Some of them are still carburated, some of them are still on leaves. That's the area. Squarebody Chevies, it's all in there.
[00:20:32.340] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. Anything prior to 1990?
[00:20:36.500] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. If it's got an LS in it, that's fine. Just something that has either been If you just stick with prior to '90, you can pretty much go from anything from there.
[00:20:50.820] - Big Rich Klein
Great. And you're doing this at SMORE, the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch in Seymour, Missouri. And what activities are going on?
[00:21:07.680] - Zack Grimes
So on Friday, what we do is get everybody together mid-morning, and Until that day, we don't really know who all is going to be there exactly. We have a good idea, but there still could be a few show up. A lot of people have never taken their Scout out to an off-road park. We got to start off slow and just see what everybody wants to do. There's some easier trails there, and we'll go run those for about an hour. Then just talk amongst the group. Hey, how did everyone like those trails? Do you want to go up a notch? Do you want to stay where we're at? Last year, we stayed in one group, but this year we may break off into two groups if we have enough people that maybe want to go for a little more difficult trail or stay on the moderate trails. Or easy. I mean, there's easy trails there as well.
[00:22:14.040] - Big Rich Klein
Guys, When everybody's camped out there, is there everybody's individual dinners and breakfast, or do you have a group thing going on?
[00:22:23.220] - Zack Grimes
Friday night, everybody does their own thing for dinner. At least they did last year. I'm trying to work on getting a few more social events going on throughout the whole weekend, but I haven't really thought a too much Friday night. Last year, it worked fine where everybody broke into smaller groups and went into town and had dinner or cooked at the off-road park. I haven't decided on if we're going to do anything Friday night or not. Saturday morning, we did wake up and give everybody biscuits and gravy, so that was an option. They started bringing in food trucks, and so there's a great food truck that is usually there, and I think they're slated to be there that weekend that we're going to be there again. She's got all sorts of different options. She's got breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But she does a great job. If your biscuits and gravy isn't your thing, you We can go get some breakfast from her. Then we go out on about a three-hour road trip, hitting up some of the cooler spots around the area outside of the park. Nice. Even if you don't I mean, if you absolutely didn't even want to off road your vehicle, there's still something for you to do at our event.
[00:23:51.740] - Zack Grimes
We have some very cool points of interest on our route, and it'll be different than last year. I'm currently working out the specifics of that route right now.
[00:24:03.020] - Big Rich Klein
Nice.
[00:24:03.760] - Zack Grimes
But once everybody has had lunch on Saturday, we usually stop at this general store. It's a 100-year-old general store that's still operating, and they serve lunch. We usually have lunch there, and then we come back to the park. At that point, break into our groups again and go hit a couple more trails and try to be back by dinner because we have a caterer Catered. Part of your ticket is a catered barbecue dinner from a place in Springfield that drives out, and they do a fantastic job. After dinner, we have a raffle, and we've got tons of great prizes We've been blessed with a lot of really good sponsors so far. We do a raffle, and usually everybody goes home with something.
[00:24:56.360] - Big Rich Klein
Nice. Idea for a social, if it's allowed. I don't know the specifics on the park, but we've been to a few things where they have like a whiskey tasting, where everybody gets together and just small portions, not chugging. It's not a drinking contest, but just a whiskey tasting type thing. And typically you can get breweries, or not breweries, distilleries involved that are, fairly local micro distilleries, that thing. So that's something to maybe look into for social activities, at least. And it's amazing how many of the ladies like to drink whiskey, too.
[00:25:47.400] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, that's not a bad idea at all.
[00:25:50.380] - Big Rich Klein
So then you want to give a shout out to who your sponsors are?
[00:25:56.180] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, certainly. So our sponsors for this year's event so far are Kaiser Willies, Super Scout Specialist, Onyx Off-Road, General Tire, IH Parts America, and the Bystate Binders, which is a group of international enthusiast, international harvester enthusiast in the St. Louis area.
[00:26:21.720] - Big Rich Klein
That's a really good- Also- Oh, go ahead.
[00:26:24.660] - Zack Grimes
One other is the Titus Adventure Company out of Colorado, and they're a company that you can rent off-road vehicles to go on trips with.
[00:26:35.220] - Big Rich Klein
Oh, excellent.
[00:26:35.860] - Zack Grimes
It's a new sponsor.
[00:26:36.880] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent. That's quite a good list for just a second year coming up. So congratulations on that.
[00:26:46.200] - Zack Grimes
Yeah, thank you. We had quite a few last year, so we're expecting the list to grow for sure. But we're always certainly looking for more. And if anyone's interested in helping us, we would appreciate it.
[00:26:58.560] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent.
[00:26:59.500] - Zack Grimes
We're I definitely could use some sponsors still.
[00:27:02.200] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. How would people get in touch with you to become a sponsor?
[00:27:10.420] - Zack Grimes
We have a Facebook page, we've got an Instagram page, and we even have a YouTube channel. But the easiest way to get a hold of me is probably through Facebook. If you want to send me a message on there, I check that daily. We've got several different levels of sponsorship, and we have a a lot of different ways that we can help promote your business. We can do a social media shout out where you've got a pamphlet that we're putting together for this year's event. Then if you are at a certain level, we're even putting your name on the back of our T-shirts this year.
[00:27:46.580] - Big Rich Klein
And is that Facebook page... What's the name of the Facebook page? Is it your personal page or is it the Rally page? Yeah.
[00:27:54.960] - Zack Grimes
Our Facebook page and our Instagram and our YouTube are all under Rally in the Ozark.
[00:28:00.660] - Big Rich Klein
Rally in the Ozarks, and that's R-A-L-L-Y-E?
[00:28:05.370] - Zack Grimes
Yes.
[00:28:06.520] - Big Rich Klein
Okay. And then, again, Zack Grimes?
[00:28:14.000] - Zack Grimes
Yeah.
[00:28:14.620] - Big Rich Klein
And And your email address, if you don't mind, in case people want to get a hold of you that way.
[00:28:21.040] - Zack Grimes
So it's zackery, Z-A-C-K-E-R-Y. Grimes92@gmail. Com. @eil. Com.
[00:28:31.140] - Big Rich Klein
Want to talk about the dates and any more about the rally?
[00:28:36.440] - Zack Grimes
Yeah. This year's dates are October third and fourth in Seymour, Missouri, at the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch. We've got, so that's Friday and Saturday. Your ticket includes two days of wheeling at the park, a T-shirt, a A giveaway bag, and raffle prize ticket, also the dinner Saturday night.
[00:29:08.500] - Big Rich Klein
And is there an extra charge for camping or anything like that, or is that all included?
[00:29:14.140] - Zack Grimes
Camping and Any lodging at the park has to be taken care of through SMOR.
[00:29:20.060] - Big Rich Klein
Through the park itself. Okay. Yeah, makes sense.
[00:29:24.960] - Zack Grimes
And then any of our proceeds go to the ABA Shriner Hospital Dads. They're a group of dads who transport children in Southern Missouri to and from doctor appointments. They pay for the fuel, the food, and they even have paid for life flights before. They're a volunteer group out of Springfield, Missouri, and they do some great things. Last year, we were able to donate $1,000 to them, and we're hoping to work with them again this year and donate some more.
[00:29:58.600] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent. How did you How did you hook up with them?
[00:30:03.380] - Zack Grimes
Well, I mean, I have a neighbor who's a Shriner, and I thought I'll give them a call. Their head of, I guess, Charity... Somebody within their charity got me in touch with this sub-charity that is the ABA Shriner Hospital Dads.
[00:30:26.720] - Big Rich Klein
Excellent. Excellent.
[00:30:28.680] - Zack Grimes

[00:30:41.440] - Zack Grimes
I hope this year, I think they're wanting to bring out their their van, and maybe meet some people. So I think that's on the table.
[00:30:50.640] - Big Rich Klein
